Handmade Tile Workshop

Instructor:  Kala Stein

Host: Kala Stein Studio

Location: La Haye Art Center, 148 East Napa Street, Sonoma, CA 95476

Saturday, October 25 and Sunday, October 26, 2025, 10am-4pm

In this technique-based workshop, Kala teaches how to make tile for your decorative and functional needs. We will start with rolling slabs with and without a slab roller, as well as make one press mold for a bas relief or shaped tile. During this workshop, you will learn different approaches, tools, and approaches to tile making. It is not a high production opportunity but rather, you will learn best practices, tips and tricks for design and production that you can take back to use in your studio.

We will be working in the gallery space as well as Kala's studio, just down the hall so be prepared to be on your feet between the spaces, and both indoors and outdoors.

  • Bring an idea of what you want to make- size and shape of the tile, photocopies, sketches. Please limit your size to about 6".
    • We will focus on 2 projects to explore tile making:
      • hand cutting simple geometric shapes
      • modeling a bas relief tile that has texture and shape, which we will then make a plaster press mold from.

$450 includes enrollment in the workshop, registration fee, 25 pounds of clay,  plaster for one 6" or smaller mold, plaster tools, tea, coffee, and light snacks. There is free parking at the studio. Firing is not included in this workshop.

Space is limited to 10 participants.

Once you register, you will find class resources, a tool list and helpful resources in your student dashboard, so be sure to make an account and log in. We hope you will join us!
