Colored Clay & Pattern Design

Cody Hoyt's two-hour workshop is designed to provide an entry point & foundation for those interested in learning about the fundamentals of colored clay, aka “Nerikomi”. The workshop will be a specific introduction to the process of making colored clay and pattern development, so it’s a great place to start for those who find Nerikomi interesting and would benefit from experienced insight into Cody's practice which he's developed and honed over the past 14 years. The workshop will feature an in-depth, detailed discussion about clay, tools, and material preparation before moving into fundamental techniques for mixing, marbling and patterning colored clay. Cody will demonstrate methods he uses in his studio practice, ranging from loose, abstract marbling into concise engineered patterns. This workshop focuses on foundational techniques and is a pre-requisite for Cody's future form-building workshops. Participants are recommended to have at least a basic understanding of ceramics, clay, hand building and firing before taking the course. The workshop is intended to deliver information and is at a pace that will not be suitable to work along with, so we recommend to watch the workshop then work at your own pace as you will have 90 days to rewatch. Cody Hoyt

Hoyt received his B.F.A. from the Massachusetts College of Art in 2007. He has exhibited in the US and abroad, including galleries such as The Future Perfect, Patrick Parrish, R and Company, The Hole, UNTITLED Art fair and Design Miami. He has created public artwork for the city of Columbus, Indiana and is a recipient of the Peter S Reed Foundation grant. Featured publications include Elle Decor, Architectural Digest, the Wall Street Journal and American Craft Magazine. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
